The University of Melbourne Gateway to Research on Soviet History
Introduction:
It is envisaged that MelGrosh will eventually combine several different
suites of data bases. At the moment the first of these suites to be
established is MelGrosh-Pol a series of databases related to Soviet
Politics of the Stalin period.
Melgrosh-pol currently contains data grouped into five sections: The
first four sections contain data on politically significant individuals
and their meetings. The final section contains data on materials
produced by these political meetings.
Section 1 is a directory of politically significant individuals. This
directory contains the names of all the individuals who met Stalin in
his Kremlin office and who were listed in his visitors book. It also
contains the names of all individuals who were members of the major
political bodies (Politburo, Orgburo, Secretariat, Central Committee,
Central Control Committee) or who attended the sessions of any of these
bodies. It also contains the names of all individuals appointed to
senior state bodies, or to the collegia of those bodies. Finally it
also contains the names of all individuals who attended certain Party
Congresses. Some biographical data are available for some of these
individuals. The basic bio-data often also contains details of when
they joined the Communist Party, ie. Party Stazh.
Section 2 contains details of the meetings between some of these
individuals and Stalin. Attendances at meetings with Stalin were
recorded in a haphazard way from the mid 1920s. From 1928 the time of
commencement of meetings was recorded and from 1930 both the time of
commencement and the time of completion of each meeting was recorded.
Section 3 contains details of attendance at different sessions of the
major party bodies: the politburo, Orgburo and secretariat and the
Party Control Commission and its buro.
Section 4 contains data on elections and appointments to the key party
and state bodies.
Section 5 contain a different set of data relating to materials rather
than to individuals and meetings. Part of this section is a listing of
the Politburo agenda items for each session of the Politburo. Another
part is a listing of the different type of decrees produced by the
Council of Peoples Commissars and the Council of Labour and Defence.
This is a collaborative project involving researchers in Melbourne,
Moscow, Birmingham and Chicago.
