The British School at Rome Image Digitisation Project (a new elsewhereonline partner project)
The University of Western Australia, the University of Melbourne, the British School at Rome, URBS (Unione Romana Biblioteche Scientifiche), the Archivio di Stato, Rome, and the Elsewhereonline have initiated a project to digitise rare images of Rome.
This
project, which forms part of the Australian Research Council funded
project E-Research project (First Chief Investigator, Professor Susan
Broomhall, University of Western Australia; industry partner:
Australians Studying Abroad), is devoted to the task of digitising
images of rare topographical prints in the British School at Rome. The
British School at Rome has one of the finest collections in the world
of topographical material relating to Rome, much of it assembled by its
first director, Thomas Ashby. Forming part of this collection are
several hundred topographical prints which have hitherto been
uncatalogued and little known to scholars, let along to a wider
audience. Many of these prints are not well known, and few are
available publicly. The initial project will catalogue and digitise 110
of these prints at a high resolution, and make them publicly available
through the websites of www.elsewhere.com.au, URBS (Unione Romana
Biblioteche Scientifiche), and the Archivio di Stato, Rome. Preliminary
sorting and classification work has been undertaken in February 2007 by
the Melbourne University Art History Intern at the British School,
Caterina Sciacca, who will be undertaking the full cataloguing and
digitisation of the prints as the Australian Research Council
E-Research www.elsewhereonline.com.au Intern later in 2007.
