In October 2006, the Australian Research Council announced research funding worth more than $130 000 for a new place-related project, involving Dr Susan Broomhall (UWA), Professor Jeff Malpas (Tasmania), Associate Professor Joan Barclay Lloyd (LaTrobe), Professor John Griffiths and industry partner Christopher Wood, Australians Studying Abroad. The three-year project, "An Interdisciplinary Framework for place-based research and its impact on the tourist industry" takes a socio-cultural analysis to the understanding of place. It explores the relationship of scholarly analysis of place to ontological aspects of tourism, and is motivated by the need for new theoretical models and practical knowledge in educational tourism. The project will provide specialist and interdisciplinary research training for post-doctoral researchers, who will work with senior experts in their fields, to develop new frameworks for thinking about place within specific locations. Many of the results will be presented through essays written for the Place journal on the www.elsewhereonline.com.au site.
