University of Western Australia and Australians Studying Abroad receive new grant to research educational tourism.

The University of Western Auistralia and Australians Studying Abroad receive Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education Competitive Grant.

In May 2007, the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education announced research funding of $149 779 for a new study of the relationship of learning and/in place. It will involved humanities and education researchers Associate Professor Susan Broomhall (UWA), Tim Pitman (Curtin/UWA) and Australians Studying Abroad. The two-year project, "Articulating Lifelong Learning in Tourism Education: Dialogue between Humanities Scholars and Travel Providers" aims to determine how we can increase communication between humanities academics and the educational tourism sector with the ultimate aim of developing traveller-students with enhanced reflective/action-learning capabilities. It will investigate the pedagogical concerns of humanities academics within the material they produce for travel companies and the reasons for which they engage with the sector. In turn, it will examine the learning outcomes identified by the educational tourism industry for its clientele. As a result of the analysis of these two sectors, a framework articulating the lifelong learning objectives of educational tourism will enhance the dialogue and rigor of the materials academics can produce for it. The project is designed to specifically address the Carrick Institute Competitive Grant Program's intention to support "strategic approaches by higher education providers to increase recognition of the importance of teaching in higher education, both within institutions and within the wider community" . Many of the results will be presented through the the www.elsewhereonline.com.au site.
